ACCESS

How should an access controller behave offline?

Document what stays local, what stops and what recovers after connectivity returns.

Separate power from network

A lost cloud link, a failed switch and an unpowered controller are different events. The product and wiring design determine which doors can read credentials or record events.

Review approved entry and exit

Agree on local schedules, cached credentials, egress, battery duration and any building-specific life-safety requirements with the responsible parties.

Run a controlled test

Observe behavior during a planned interruption and restoration. Record event reconciliation, administrator actions and exceptions so staff know what to expect.

Working example: The scenario below is illustrative. It describes a practical design and review method, not a completed customer project or a guaranteed result.

A working scenario

During an ISP outage, some doors still honor cached permissions while a newly revoked badge is delayed. Offline behavior depends on actual platform configuration.

The decision to make before buying

Document which decisions are local, which changes require cloud access, buffer size, timekeeping, power reserve and emergency egress. Identify the customer's tolerance for stale permissions.

A useful acceptance test

In a controlled window, interrupt and restore connectivity, then test known valid, denied, newly changed credentials, alarm delivery and event synchronization.

What the owner should receive

Write the platform-specific outage runbook, results, limits, manual fallback and responsible recovery contacts.

Questions owners ask

Does cloud access require a live internet connection for every badge?

It depends on the specific controller, cache and configuration. Many systems can make local decisions for known credentials, while enrollment, revocation or event delivery may wait. Obtain product-specific documentation and test the installed version; a general product category cannot answer this safely.

Which outage cases matter most?

Test connectivity loss, controller power loss, clock drift, a newly added or revoked credential, buffered event replay and recovery. Include what staff should do if an opening no longer meets policy. Define emergency egress separately with the qualified design team.
